Matt Smith of Doctor Who fame will star in the next Terminator film. Skydance, which is producing the film with Paramount, tweeted the news earlier Friday, and the studio followed with confirmation. Smith will play a new character with a strong connection to anti-robot resistance fighter John Connor, now played by Zero Dark Thirty‘s Jason Clarke.

Game of Throne‘s Emilia Clarke plays Sarah Connor and Jai Courtney has been cast as Kyle Reese. Arnold Schwarzenegger is slated to be back — but, of course — joining newcomers J.K. Simmons, Dayo Okeniyi, and Byung Hun Lee.

Alan Taylor, who helmed the most recent Thor sequel, is directing the film, which is rumored to be titled Terminator: Genesis. Paramount has set a release date of July 1, 2015.

Matt Smith has revealed that he would like to return to ‘Doctor Who’ in the future.

He played The Doctor in the sci-fi series for almost four years, before announcing that he was leaving, with the role later being taken over by Peter Capaldi, who made his first appearance at the end of the 2013 Christmas special.

Speaking at Wizard World Con, Matt announced he’d be happy to follow in the footsteps of his predecessor David Tennant – who returned to the series as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations last year – and reprise his role as The Eleventh Doctor in the future, saying: “I’ll happily come back for another anniversary.”

He also praised David’s brief ‘Doctor Who’ comeback, explaining: “It was a real historic moment for me. I always look at David and go, ‘Oh my God. It’s ‘Doctor Who!’

“David is a great guy and a good friend. It was so fun. Doctors in the same room is just magic, isn’t it?”

Matt isn’t the only former star who wants to appear on the show again, as recently Tom Baker – who played the Fourth Doctor – said he would “never rule out” a future appearance in ‘Doctor Who’.

The new series of ‘Doctor Who’ is due to air on the BBC later this year.

Guest stars in future episodes will include ‘Line Of Duty’ actress Keeley Hawes, former ‘Emmerdale’ star Samuel Anderson and Ben Miller, who will be playing an evil villain.

The end of Matt Smith’s run on “Doctor Who” was plenty emotional, but luckily he and co-star Jenna-Louise Coleman were able to keep smiles on their faces in those final days.

In a a behind-the-scenes video from The Wrap, which appears on the “Day of the Doctor” DVD release, Smith commandeers a camera to ask Coleman what she’ll miss most about him. “The daily abuse,” she answers.

Based on the hugs and jokes they share in the video, it’s easy to see just how special their connection aboard the TARDIS was.
